Hope and H.O.P.E on NewsNite. for April 6

by Jody Miller on April 4, 2012

Tune in to a special edition of NewsNite. April 6 at 8:30 p.m. While our regular panel of journalists has the weekend off, I’ll have the chance to explore two very special programs here in Northeast Ohio … South Street Ministries and Clearview H.O.P.E.

It was 15 years ago when Duane and Lisa Crabbs made a life altering decision; they packed up their four children, moved to an inner-city Akron neighborhood just south of downtown and founded South Street Ministries. Their lives and the lives of the people in that neighborhood were forever changed. From a “sweat equity” bicycle shop and after-school and athletic programs to urban gardens, summer camp, employment services and the enterprising The Front Porch, Duane and Lisa Crabbs have taken the ideal Christian Community Development Organization model and made it a reality in the community they now call home. Why this amazing couple does what they do is part of the story we tell in the first segment of this week’s NewsNite.

Our second NewsNite. segment is about HOPE … as in Clearview H.O.P.E., a pilot year-round, cost-free rehabilitative golf program launched last spring at historic Clearview Golf Club in East Canton. Under the acronym HOPE, as in Helping Our Patriots Everywhere, this program reached out and brought together local women veterans, who not only learned and played golf but found camaraderie and friendship. To talk about this pioneering effort, I am joined by a pioneer in her own right — PGA and LPGA golf professional Renee Powell – and a former U.S. Air Force captain and Vietnam War veteran, Ninth District Court of Appeals Judge Beth Whitmore. They share the joys and uplifting stories of the first formative year of this program, as well as the reasons why and hope that Clearview H.O.P.E. will be sustained for years to come.

The interviews in both segments of this special edition of NewsNite. extend beyond the time parameters of broadcast television and will be available in their entirety here on this site simultaneously with our broadcast at 8:30 on Friday.

For more information on either or both of these programs, visit South Street Ministries and check out Clearview H.O.P.E. at the Clearview website.

Hope you enjoy these remarkable stories as much as I enjoyed learning about and talking with these four very special guests … this kind of work is the very best part of my job!
